Vietnamese President To Lam has taken over as acting Communist Party general secretary after the death of long-serving party boss Nguyen Phu Trong.
Lam, the one-party state's former top cop, faces the geopolitical challenge of steering Vietnam between China, its powerful fellow Communist neighbor and South China Sea rival, and the United States, a former battlefield foe turned security and economic partner.
