Shanghai has decreed that “all cosplaying is prohibited, and no Halloween make-up will be permitted” in the mega-city‘s central Huangpu district this year. Chinese authorities’ general disdain for imported Western celebrations was compounded last October by throngs of young people marking Halloween on the streets of China’s largest city -- some wearing costumes that satirized leader Xi Jinping and his policies.
