Former RFA Tibetan chief named new Managing Editor for East Asia
WASHINGTON–Radio Free Asia (RFA) today announced Rosa Hwang as its new Executive Editor. A network news veteran, she brings 25 years of experience working as an executive and award-winning producer in international broadcast journalism, reporting and producing stories from 20+ countries, including China, Pakistan and Russia. In addition, RFA has named former Tibetan Service Director Kalden Lodoe as its new Managing Editor for East Asia.
“Rosa is a proven newsroom leader with two decades of experience producing award-winning reporting across the globe,” said RFA President Bay Fang. “As RFA continues to transition toward producing more digital content to better inform our audiences in Asia and worldwide, she will help us stay competitive and strengthen RFA’s congressionally mandated mission.
“In addition, I’m delighted to announce Kalden Lodoe as our new East Asia Managing Editor. His vast experience as a journalist and newsroom leader make him the ideal person to drive our coverage in the region forward. Congratulations to Rosa and Kalden.”
Hwang said: “It is an honor to join RFA during this critical time. I have long respected RFA’s journalism and value providing people in Asia and elsewhere with pivotal news that would otherwise be censored or ignored by state media. I look forward to working with my new colleagues to lead RFA and its editorial teams forward.”
In her role at RFA, Hwang will oversee RFA’s editorial division, including news production and strategy. Working closely with RFA’s president and senior editorial staff, she will supervise the organization’s award-winning journalists to develop innovative ways to further advance RFA’s programming and reach.
Hwang previously worked from 2011-2023 at CTV News, a division of CTV - Canada’s largest private broadcaster - where she held key roles including executive producer and senior producer of National News and Network Specials. During her 12-year tenure she oversaw the production of Canada’s most-watched national newscast, maintaining its position in a competitive field. She promoted a transformational ‘digital first’ strategy within the national newsroom, leading a team that included all foreign and national correspondents, producers and writers. Hwang began her career at CBC News where she held a number of editorial positions in Calgary, Toronto and Washington. She earned her Bachelor of Applied Communications in Journalism at Mount Royal University in Calgary, and her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Calgary.
Lodoe, who has served as Director of RFA’s Tibetan Service since 2017, will now be Managing Editor of East Asia, where he will oversee the editorial operations and content strategy for RFA’s East Asia programming. Lodoe has been at RFA since its founding, serving in a number of roles including broadcaster, correspondent and senior editor. With this promotion, Tenzin Pema, formerly RFA Tibetan’s Associate Director, was named the language service’s Director.
